The Thai Children Love Reading Campaign

The 2006 National Statistics Office findings showed that Thai people read an average of 5 books : head : annum while Americans read 50 books : head : annum. Boosting the reading habit among the youth is a major issue in Thailand as Thai children tend to consume other media including television and Internet. They are not stimulated to concentrate on reading and lack the opportunity to read.

Big C Foundation and Office of The Basic Education Commission have initiated Thai Kids Love to Read Project aiming to encourage Thai children to read more and spend their leisure time reading. The campaign was designed to celebrate His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary in 2007. Activities under the program are:

1. Providing Thai junior encyclopedias as initiated by His Majesty the King which are a source of diverse knowledge

Big C Foundation has delivered Thai junior encyclopedias (each set includes 30 hard cover books) with cabinets, creating a mini-library for 230 schools nationwide and providing 3,000 sets of encyclopedias (6 volumes per set) to 3,000 secondary schools throughout the kingdom.
